THE BIG FIVE SAFARI
Get an up close encounter with the beast of nature. Picturesque, steep forested ravines and open moorland characterise the Aberdare National Park. The rare sightings include Giant Forest hog, African civet cat, blue duiker and bongo. Mount Kenya is the second tallest mountain in Africa. The scenery surrounding this designated World Heritage Site is breath-taking. Sweetwaters chimpanzee sanctuary forms a conducive habitat for chimpanzees and other primates as the Ewaso Nyiro River runs cuts across. . In this dry thorn studded forest lies Samburu National Reserve. The Samburu region is the best place to find several endemic northern species including Gerenuk, the reticulated giraffe and gravy zebra. Welcome to Complete Wilderness, brilliant on a magnificent scale, the Meru National Park is little visited and utterly unspoilt; few places are comparable to the remote and rugged atmosphere found here.
DAY 1: MERU
Depart after breakfast for Meru National Park. This achieved worldwide fame with its association to Joy Adamson's Born Free. A wide range of wildlife including elephant, hippopotamus, lion, leopard, cheetah, reticulated giraffe, and zebra.
The bird life is also impressive and there are roughly 280 recorded species. After lunch you can relax, before enjoying an extended afternoon game drive.
DAY 2: MERU
With a packed lunch, spend the whole day in exploring the meru national park its wild and beauty. Straddling the equator and bisected by 13 rivers and numerous mountain-fed streams, it is an especially beautiful area of Kenya. It has diverse scenery from woodlands at 3,400ft (1,036m) on the slopes of Nyambeni Mountain Range, north east of Mt. Kenya, to wide open plains with meandering riverbanks dotted with doum palms.
DAY 3: SAMBURU
We travel by road to Kenya's northern frontier. Wild and rugged, Samburu is fiercely beautiful with its arid savannahs watered by the lovely Uaso Nyiro River. It is also one of Kenya's most protected areas and home to species only found north of the equator, from the reticulated giraffe to Grevy's zebras and Beisa Oryx’s. We also enjoy Larsens Tented Camp or Samburu Intrepids Camp, our luxurious hostelry set beneath a canopy of acacia trees along the banks of the river.
DAY 4: SAMBURU
Dawn breaks in golden bands as we start our day in the bush by scanning the river from our tent's veranda. Before the dew is off the grass, we're off in pursuit of the elephants, lions, leopards, and cheetahs that thrive in the reserve's grasslands and acacia woodlands.
And so the day is spent in alternating pursuits of exploration in the bush and relaxation in our cozy camp.
DAY 5 AND 6: SWEETWATERS
After breakfast, we travel overland to the Sweetwaters game reserve and chimpanzee sanctuary. This 70,000-acre private preserve has views of the peaks of Mount Kenya and offers game drives into countryside many travelers never see. We check into our tented camp or Lodge where we stay for the next two nights.
In fact Sweetwaters boasts excellent game viewing with the highest ratio of game to area of any park or reserve in Kenya. Moreover, the camp has its own private waterhole and salt lick. So we'll be guaranteed unprecedented close encounters. Whether its day or night game drives, camel trekking, lion tracking, al fresco dining or relaxing by pool, Sweetwaters is bound to delight.
DAY 7: ABERDARES
Our destination today is the Aberdare National Park or Mt. Kenya National Park. We travel overland south from Samburu to The Aberdare Country Club, nestled on the slopes of Mweiga Hill.
After lunch, set off for the Ark tree lodge, located in the forest on mountain slopes of the Aberdare Mountains at 7,000 feet.
